Disclosed is an open-cell microcellular foam comprising an alkenyl aromatic polymer foam, the foam being characterized in that the foam has an average cell size of 70 micrometers or less, the foam being evacuated, the foam containing an infrared attenuating agent in a quantity sufficient to reduce the thermal conductivity of the foam relative to a corresponding foam without the infrared attenuating agent. Also disclosed is a closed cell, unevacuated microcellular foam comprising an alkenyl aromatic polymer foam, the foam having an average cell size of 1.0 micrometers or less, the foam being characterized in that it contains an infrared attenuating agent in a quantity sufficient to reduce the thermal conductivity of the foam relative to a corresponding foam without the infrared attenuating agent.
On décrit une mousse microcellulaire dans laquelle l'air a été évacué ou non, contenant un agent de réduction des infrarouges. La taille moyenne des cellules composant la mousse dans laquelle l'air a été évacué est de 70 micromètres, voire moins. La taille moyenne des cellules composant la mousse dans laquelle l'air n'a pas été évacué est de 1 micromètre, voire moins. Cet agent de réduction des infrarouges permet d'obtenir une réduction de la conductivité thermique de la mousse proportionnellement supérieure à celle que l'on obtient avec des mousses dont les cellules sont de plus grande taille. Un procédé d'utilisation desdites mousses est également décrit.
