The invention consists of a method of identifying molecules, comprising the steps of: a) passing the molecules through a microfluid channel located on a microfluid chip such that the molecules flow through the channel as a stream of individual molecules; b) irradiating each individual molecule in turn at a specific point along the channel with an excitation source such that the irradiated molecule emits fluorescence; c) capturing the emitted fluorescence with a detection device to produce a fluorescence emission spectrum; and d) analyzing the fluorescence emission spectrum to identify the individual molecules.
