Abstract: The invention provides new mutant strains of Escherichia coli and relates to their use for the preparation of glutathione. The new mutant strain is characterized in that it is active upon a .gamma.-glutanyl- L-cysteine synthesizing enzyme system and is capable of releasing .gamma.-glutanyl-L-cysteine synthetase from the inhibition by glutathione. A method of preparing the new mutant strain is disclosed together with a method of obtaining glutathione by culturing the mutant strain or employing the enzyme system thereby produced.
