Abstract Provision of microorganisms having an ability to convert, in high yields. precursors in high concentrations to 3.alpha.- hydroxy-7-keto-5.beta.-cholanic acid, 3.alpha.-hydroxy-7,12-diketo-5.beta.- cholanic acid or 3.alpha., 12.alpha.-dihydroxy-7-keto- 5.beta.-cholanic acid, each being useful as an intermediate for preparation of ursodeoxycholic acid, and provision of methods to produce these compounds in high yields using such microorganisms. Bacillus sp. TTUR 2-2, TTUR 4-1, TTUR 4-2, TTUR 2-M4, TTUR 2-M5, TTUR 2-M4-250 and TTUR 2- M4-294 having an ability to convert precursors to 3.alpha.-hydroxy-7-keto-5.beta.- cholanic acid, 3.alpha.-hydroxy-7,12-diketo-5.beta.-cholanic acid or 3.alpha., 12.alpha.- dihydroxy-7-keto-5.beta.-cholanic acid, and processes for producing these compounds by culturing these microorganisms in precursor-containing media.
