A microprocessor-based voltage regulator for an alternator reduces battery drain by removing current from the field coil during times when the alternator is not rotating, as indicated by an AC Sense signal responsive to one of the windings of the alternator prior to rectification. The field coil switch is controlled by the microprocessor to one of four duty cycles to provide effective voltage regulation with a minimum of additional hardware. The microprocessor generates a warning signal in the event of a non-standard operating condition such as drifting voltage regulation, disconnected batteries, or thermal limits that approach shut down.

Ce régulateur réduit le trop-plein de batterie en supprimant le courant de la bobine de champ au cours de périodes de temps où l'alternateur ne tourne pas, d'après les indications fournies par un signal de détection c.a. réagissant à l'un des enroulements de l'alternateur avant le redressement. L'interrupteur de la bobine de champ, commandé par le microprocesseur, suit l'un des quatre cycles d'utilisation définis; on obtient ainsi un réglage efficace de la tension avec un minimum de matériel supplémentaire. Le microprocesseur produit un signal avertisseur lorsque survient une condition de fonctionnement non standard, par exemple la dérive de la tension stabilisée, des batteries déconnectées ou des limites thermiques proches du niveau d'arrêt.
