MICROPROCESSOR IMPLEMENTED ELECTROSURGICAL GENERATOR Abstract An electrosurgical generator having a source of electrosurgical energy connected to a load including a patient. A microprocessor implemented control circuit adjusts the actual power delivered to the load, the circuit including first circuitry for determining the impedance of the load; second circuitry for computing a correction factor depending on the value of the impedance where the correction factor corresponds to a required load power; and a third circuit responsive to the correction factor for adjusting the source of electrosurgical power so that the ac- tual power follows the required power. The control circuit also includes circuitry for selecting first and second modes of operation of the generator when the load impedance exceeds a predetermined value where, in the first mode, a constant voltage charac- teristic is maintained and in the second mode, the load power is decreased in accordance with the square of the load impe- dance.
