913,318 ABSTRACT An article and method of making the same is disclosed, which article has a substantially antireflecting surface and comprises a substrate having a surface coating of a metal oxide such as an oxide of aluminum magnesium or zinc. The surface coating is a substantially complete conversion of a thin film of the selected metal wherein the thickness of the thin film prior to conversion is at least 5 nanometers. After conversion, the surface is characterized by a plurality of randomly positioned discrete leaflets of varying heights and sizes which extend from the surface a distance of not less than 20 nanometers, the bases of the leaflets contacting the bases of substantially all adjacent leaflets. The antireflecting properties thus provided by such a microstructured surface are such that the total specular reflectance of the coating of visible light incident and normal to the surface is less than 1%.
