A method for drying coal using microwave energy to achieve a controlled aggregate moisture content target range without starting combustion or degrading the coking qualities of the coal. Coal feed stock is first separated into fine grade coal and one or more larger grades. The fine grade coal is loaded onto a conveyor as a bed of fixed depth. The fine grade coal is conveyed continuously through a microwave-energized heating chamber for drying. The fine grade coal is dried sufficiently so that when it is combined with the larger grade coals, the moisture content of the aggregate is within a target moisture content range. By volumetrically and uniformly heating the coal, the microwave heating chamber boils away the water without heating the coal itself above about 90°C. In this way, the coal does not combust or oxidize, and its coking qualities are retained.
L'invention concerne un procédé de séchage de charbon à l'aide d'une énergie sous forme de micro-ondes pour atteindre de façon régulée une plage-cible de teneur d'humidité de l'agrégat sans déclencher de combustion ni dégrader les qualités de cokéfaction du charbon. La charge de charbon est d'abord séparée en charbon de catégorie fine et en une ou plusieurs catégories plus grossières. Le charbon de catégorie fine est chargé sur un convoyeur sous la forme d'un lit d'épaisseur fixée. Le charbon de catégorie fine est convoyé en continu à travers une chambre de chauffage à micro-ondes en vue de son séchage. Le charbon de catégorie fine est suffisamment séché pour que, lorsqu'il est combiné aux charbons de catégories plus grossières, la teneur d'humidité de l'agrégat se situe à l'intérieur d'une plage-cible de teneur d'humidité. En chauffant le charbon de façon volumétrique et uniforme, la chambre de chauffage à micro-ondes évapore l'eau sans chauffer le charbon lui-même au-dessus d'environ 90°C. De cette façon, le charbon ne s'enflamme pas et ne s'oxyde pas, et conserve donc ses qualités de cokéfaction.
