A MICROWAVE APPARATUS ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a microwave apparatus for the preparation of food, with a lower portion for holding a pot-, dish-, or pan-like container for the food, said container enclosing at least a part of the cooking space and is manipulable independently of a basic device consisting of the lower section, an upper section which, in the operating position, fits over the lower section in the manner of a hood or cowl, and an intermediate column that joins the lower section and the upper section, the aforementioned container resting in operating position with its upper edge against the upper section that encloses the remainder of the cooking space so as to form a seal, thereby preventing the egress of microwave radiation. In order to provide for easier manipulation, more versatile application, and to ensure economy of space in such a microwave apparatus it is arranged that the lower section and the upper section are hinged to each other in such a manner that by relative displacement of the upper section and the lower section, the upper section when in a closed operating posi- tion lies against the top edge of the container and in the open position frees the container so that it can be removed, in which connection, in particular, the lower section and the upper section are hinged to each other in such a manner that the upper section when in the closed non-operating position--with the container removed--lies in the area of the standing surface for the con- tainer on the lower section, or close to this.
