ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A damper mechanism of a microwave oven is controlled by means of a shape memory alloy spring element. In one aspect means are provided to direct current to a shape memory alloy spring element to cause it to open the damper for microwave cooking and to permit the damper to close for other types of cooking. Particularly, it relates to the damper mechanism de- signed for extending the service lives of the shape memory alloy spring elements as well as for substituting the power otherwise needed for moving the damper unit.
