The subject of the invention is an innovative usage of Gunn diode combined with varactor for simultaneous detection and generation of frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar signal of millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelength range. Detection or mixing of the returning microwave energy takes place simultaneously with generation. The specific prototype implementation of radar device based on said principle is shown to exhibit very good performance with very simple, low cost yet high sensitivity design.
