ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A reversibly swellable tri-laminar mineral is disclosed having a crystalline structure over a large area, with the crystal layers separated from one another. The process for production of the mineral from vermiculite, hydro-mica or mixed- layer mineral is also disclosed. The novel mineral is useful as a fire-proofing compound and as a plant protection agent.
