A locating devise comprising a tank circuit for driving a DSP element when sufficient ambient power is present, The DSP element is configured to detect a device-identifying code in a carrier signal transmitted by cellular telephone network base stations or nodes. Upon detection of the code identifying the particular device, a connection between a battery and a transmitter is enabled. The transmitter transmits a locating beacon intermittently for the life of the battery.
