ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gas turbine combustor wherein one or more catalysts, in series, are employed to effect fuel oxidation at temperatures below flame temperature and a method of operating the same to minimize NOx formation. The turbine combustor comprises a plurality of stages. In one embodiment, the turbine comprises a two zone combustion chamber including a noncatalytic zone, in which fuel is partially combusted under fuel rich conditions, and a catalytic zone, wherein excess air is used to complete the combustion. In another embodiment, a catalyst is used in each combustion stage or zone.
