A mining or tunneling survey system and method are provided which uses a rod connected to a mine or tunnel wail to establish, by means of a light beam, a reference line ending with a dot on the face of the mine or tunnel. A survey theodolite or total station is employed to calculate and record the obtained data that can then be used for subsequent analysis, for example, by means of an AutoCAD program, outside of the mine. All operations can be performed by the same surveyor.
