A missile (12) is housed in a launcher (11) from which it is launched by efflux gases from a thrust motor (13) of the missile (12). A closure device (18) is secured by retaining screws (26) in a position in which it closes off the reaer end (16) of the missile (12) and embodies a thrust generating cartridge (35) which is fired to propel the device clear of the rear end of the missile. The closure device comprises a domed cap (19) and base plate (20) and the cartridge (39) generates thrust first to release the cap (19) and plate (20) from the screws (26) and then to displace the domed cap (19) relative to the base plate (20) to bring them to a disposition in wich the momentum of the domed cap (19) is imparted to the complete clo- sure device (18) thereby to propel the cap (19) and the plate (20) together at velocity determined by the mo- tion of the domed cap (19) relative to the base plate (20).
