Abstract Metal oxide powders of the group chromium (III) oxide, titanium (IV) oxide, vanadium (V) oxide, mixtures thereof, or mixed metal oxide powders from two representatives of the above group as well as mixtures thereof, and their use in the catalytic dehydration of hydrocarbons. New metal oxide powders or mixtures thereof, new mixed metal oxides, or mixtures thereof with advantageous properties, including BET areas of 5 to 50 m2/g and particle diameters of 25 to 350 nm are provided. With the help of the above compounds, the conversion and selectivity of the production of mono-olefins is to be increased during the catalytic dehydration of saturated hydrocarbons. The metal oxide powders are produced from mixtures of the vapourized metal compounds chromyl chloride, titanium tetrachloride or vanadyl chloride in the presence of specific gases, by laser pyrolysis. The catalytic effectiveness of the new metal oxides is examined using the dehydration of isobutane as an example.
