A transfermix includes a component having an internal operating surface provided with a helical thread and an interior component having an external operating surface provided with a helical thread of a different direction but coaxial with the helical thread on the component having the internal operating surface, the helical threads facing one another and defining a passage for a medium to be mixed. The envelope defined by the crown of the interior thread is within the envelope defined by the crown of the exterior thread up to and including coincidence of the envelopes, and the cross-sectional areas of the grooves of the facing threads vary in opposite senses between a maximum and a minimum value for each of the threads along substantially the same length of the passage. The helical thread of which the groove cross-section is being reduced comprises at least two starts of which one over a part of the axial length is reduced in groove cross-section at a lesser rate than the other is so reduced and over a different part of the axial length the first start is reduced in its groove cross-sectional area at a faster rate than the other is so reduced. In this way in operation the medium is caused to move in the passage, portions thereof are transferred between the grooves of the facing helical threads as giver and taker, with some portions in the initially more slowly reducing start of the giver-groove being transferred into the taker-groove later than some portions in the other start of the giver-groove, whereby over the axial length of transfermix geometry a measure of longitudinal mixing is effected in addition to the transverse mixing.
Mélangeur comportant une surface de travail interne pourvue d'un filet hélicoïdal, ainsi qu'un organe interne dont la surface de travail externe est aussi pourvue d'un filet hélicoïdal, mais orienté dans une direction opposée; les filets hélicoïdaux, disposés en relation coaxiale, définissent un passage pour le malaxage des matières. L'enveloppe définie par la couronne du filet intérieur se trouve à l'intérieur de l'enveloppe définie par la couronne du filet extérieur jusqu'en leur point de coïncidence, et les sections transversales des gorges opposées varient entre une valeur minimale et une valeur maximale pour chacune des gorges sur une longueur essentiellement équivalente du passage. Le filet hélicoïdal en proportion duquel une gorge est réduite comporte au moins deux points d'origine, les sections transversales de l'une et de l'autre étant réduites à des vitesses différentes sur l'une et l'autre portions de la longueur axiale. De cette façon, les matières mélangées sont mises en mouvement à l'intérieur du passage, passant d'un côté à l'autre du mélangeur à des régimes différents; cette configuration a pour effet d'ajouter au malaxage transversal des substances, un malaxage additionnel effectué dans l'axe longitudinal.
