ABSTRACT Apparatus for mixing particulate materials dispersed in respective fluid streams following a period of non-mixing direct reacting contact between the streams comprises a reactor having a reaction zone, preferably of circular section, to which a first streams is admitted via means that impart high-velocity swirling motion to the stream thereby to form a swirling annulus or vortex. An inlet directs a second stream axially into said zone to flow axially within the annulus of the first stream to interact therewith. Downstream of the reaction zone there is an after section in which the vortex of the first stream breads to mix with the second stream. A method of mixing particulate materials, using such apparatus, is also disclosed. The method is suitable for mixing hot char and carbonaceous material to effect heat exchange for pyrolysis of the carbonaceous material. - 1 -
