MMIC GAIN ELEMENT WITH ACCURATE GAIN ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention consists of a novel combination of an MMIC gain element whose gain (S21 magnitude) is subject to departure from a desired constant value over a given frequency spectrum and a passive gain correc- tion network for restoring the gain to said desired constant value without causing increases in the input (S11) or output (S22) reflectance or non-linearity in the phase (S21 phase). The passive gain correction network utilizes a pair of 90° hybrids, the first in a power division configuration, and the second in a power summation configuration. The two hybrids are inter- connected by two filters, which depending upon the nature of the departure being corrected may be alike or dissimilar. The use of hybrids with appropriately selected filters facilitates correction of the S21 magnitude in a large variety of forms (e.g. ripple, slope, excess gain) without the customary worsening of the other transfer functions. The passive gain correction network may be of a stripline/microstrip format. The invention has application to the modules used repetitively in large numbers in antenna arrays and is intended to facilitate module interchange ability in a cost effective manner.
