A method is disclosed for operating a user terminal (10), such as a cellular radiotelephone, of a type that is bidirectionally coupled to a network (32) through an RF interface. The method includes a first step of receiving a message from the network, at least a portion of the message indicating a size of a cell within which the user terminal is located. A second step of the method transmits a message to the network, the message being transmitted so as to include a guard time period that has a duration that is set by the mobile terminal a function of the indicated size of the cell. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the message received from the network is an Access Parameters message. The message transmitted to the network is an Abbreviated Burst, transmitted on a Random Access Channel (RACH), and includes at least one data portion. A number of bits transmitted during the data portion of the message is made inversely proportional to the duration of the guard time period. By example, the number of bits transmitted during the data portion varies within a range of about 200 to about 242. A digital cellular radio communications system that operates in accordance with the variable Abbreviated Burst is also disclosed. A further method of the invention adaptively adjusts the guard time period as a function of a distance between the user terminal and a base station.
