A mode transformer that enables low-loss coupling between optical modes of two waveguides with different index difference. The mode size and the effective index are gradually changed between two waveguides to gradually transform the mode shape, size, and speed with minimum power loss. The mode transformer is useful for coupling the mode of an optical fiber waveguide with low index difference to the mode of a planar high index difference waveguide, and vice versa.

La présente invention concerne un transformateur de mode qui permet un couplage avec affaiblissement faible entre les modes optiques de deux guides d'ondes aux différences d'indice dissemblables. La taille du mode et l'indice effectif sont graduellement modifiés entre les deux guides d'ondes de manière que la forme, la taille et la vitesse du mode sont progressivement transformés avec une perte de puissance minimale. Le transformateur de mode de l'invention permet de coupler le mode d'un guide d'ondes à fibres optiques à faible différence d'indice au mode d'un guide d'ondes planaire à différence d'indice élevée et vice-versa.
