CA 2281333

The modem is capable of operating according to a standard mode in which the modem allows an associated computer to communicate over a telecommunication network, or according to an autonomous mode in which one or more functions such as fax machine, answering machine, answering/recording machine, receiver of electronic messages and receiver of data files are implemented by the modem independently of the computer. The data and/or voice messages received by the modem in autonomous mode are stored in a removable nonvolatile memory. These data and/or voice messages may then be consulted by withdrawing the removable nonvolatile memory from the modem and by inserting it into an appropriate adapter linked to the computer. The present invention makes it possible to avoid the serial transfer of the data stored in the modem to the computer.
