A method for the modification of the surface of a pressure-sensitive adhesive with a functional group whereby a functional group effective in improving and regulating the adhesion can be densely and stably introduced into the surface of a pressure-sensitive adhesive. In this method, a functional group is immobilized onto the surface of a pressure- sensitive adhesive by an interfacial catalytic reaction of a pressure-sensitive adhesive phase with a phase containing a functional group- containing compound.
