This relates to methods and devices for treating reversible chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and more partic-ularly, relates to a device for exchanging energy with airway tissue such as that found in the airways of human lungs. The exchange of energy with this airway tissue in the airways reduces the ability of the airways to constrict and/or reduces the resistance within the airway to the flow of air through the airway. This also relates to a method for decreasing responsiveness or decreasing resistance to airflow of airways involves the transfer of energy to or from the airway walls to prevent or reduce airway constriction and other symptoms of lung diseases. The treatment reduces the ability of the airways to contract during an acute narrowing of the airways, reduces mucus plugging of the airways, and/or increases the airway diameter. The methods according to the present invention pro-vide a longer duration and/or more effective treatment for lung diseases than currently used drug treatments, and obviate patient compliance issues. This also includes additional steps that reduce the ability of the lung to produce at least one of the symptoms of reversible obstructive pulmonary disease and to reduce the resistance to the flow of air through a lung.

Cette invention porte sur des procédés et des dispositifs servant à traiter la bronchopneumopathie chronique obstructive réversible. Elle porte plus particulièrement sur un dispositif d'échange d'énergie avec un tissu des voies aériennes des poumons humains. L'échange d'énergie avec ce tissu dans les voies aériennes réduit la capacité des ces dernières de se comprimer et/ou diminue la résistance à l'air circulant à l'intérieur des voies aériennes. L'invention porte également sur un procédé permettant de diminuer la sensibilité ou la résistance à la circulation de l'air à l'intérieur des voies aériennes, qui consiste à transférer de l'énergie vers ou à partir des parois des voies aériennes, afin d'empêcher ou de réduire la constriction des voies aériennes et autres symptômes liés aux maladies pulmonaires. Ce traitement réduit la capacité des voies aériennes de se contracter pendant un rétrécissement aigu des voies aériennes, diminue l'obstruction des voies aériennes par le mucus, et/ou augmente le diamètre des voies aériennes. Les procédés de l'invention offrent un traitement plus durable et/ou plus efficace pour les maladies pulmonaires que ne le font les traitements médicamenteux actuellement utilisés, et éliminent les contraintes imposées au patient concernant le respect du traitement. Les procédés incluent des étapes supplémentaires destinées à réduire la capacité des poumons de produire au moins un des symptômes de la bronchopneumopathie chronique obstructive réversible, ainsi que la résistance à la circulation de l'air à l'intérieur des voies aériennes.
