Improved modification of polymer surfaces is achieved by two-step reactions on polymer surfaces, where the first reaction is nitrogen plasma treatment, preferably with a remote nitrogen plasma where the polymer is positioned downstream therefrom, and the second reaction is, for example, treatment with ozone, treatment in a corona discharge, or treatment with an oxygen, hydrogen or argon plasma.
