Human ciliary neurotrophic factor is modified by amino acid substitution to give CNTF's of value in treating diseases or disorders of the nervous system. Recombinant DNA techniques for their production are described. Also described is a method of screening for novel therapeutic proteins by determining altered electrophoretic binding properties.
