An electro-release system, for example for use in releasing a pharmaceutical compound, has an electrode and a layer structure on said electrode releasably holding an electro-releasable compound. The layer structure comprises at least one functional compound providing a first functional group forming an ionic bond with the electro-releasable compound and a second functional group which, on application of an appropriate voltage bias to the electrode, generates protons which break the ionic bond, thereby controlling release of the electro-releasable compound. Also disclosed are modified electrodes useful in such an electro-release system and having polymer bilayers based on polypyrrole or polythiophene with the two layers carrying different substituents giving different functionality or reactivity.
