ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Cellulose derivatives are described comprising a normally water-insoluble ethyl cellulose having .05 to .4 carboxyalkyl groups per anhydroglucose unit of the cellulose. These deriva- tives are insoluble in water and in acid medium but are soluble in basic aqueous media. They also have been found to be thermo- gelling. The use of these derivatives as coating materials and as shaped objects via forming techniques making use of the ther- mogelling property is disclosed. -1-
