Provided is a modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) having an ethylen content of 5 to 55 mol%, which contains a specific structural unit (I) in an amount of 0. 3 to 40 mol% and may be obtained by reacting an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) with a monofunctional epoxy compound (B) having a molecular weight of not more than 500. This can be produced by a method for producing the modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) which comprises melting and kneading an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) with a monofunctional epoxy compound (B) in an extruder. The modified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (C) is superior to a unmodified ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (A) in transparency, stretchability, flexibility and flexing resistance due to the specific structural unit (I) incorporated therein, and thus, can be used as a barrier material in various applications requiring the above performance capabilities.
L'invention concerne un copolymère éthylène-alcool de vinyle modifié (C) qui présente une teneur en éthylène de 5 à 55 moles %, contient une unité structurelle spécifique (I) selon une quantité comprise entre 0,3 et 40 moles %, et peut être obtenu par réaction d'un copolymère éthylène-alcool de vinyle (A) avec un composé époxyde monovalent (B) présentant un poids moléculaire d'au plus 500. L'invention concerne également une méthode de production du copolymère éthylène-alcool de vinyle modifié (C), qui consiste à fondre et à pétrir un copolymère éthylène-alcool de vinyle (A) avec un composé époxyde monovalent (B) dans une extrudeuse. Le copolymère éthylène-alcool de vinyle modifié (C) est supérieur à un copolymère éthylène-alcool de vinyle non modifié (A) en termes de transparence, d'aptitude à l'étirage, et de résistance à la flexion du fait de l'unité structurelle spécifique (I) qui y est incorporée, si bien qu'il peut être utilisé comme matériau barrière dans divers applications exigeant les capacités de rendement ci-décrites.
