With a device used to open an overhead garage door electrically, the device typically consists of an electric motor, some control circuitry, and a "drive gear and chain" or "screw and worm drive" mechanism. These mechanisms convert the rotational motion of the motor's shaft into a linear motion to pull open the garage door. In this invention, modifications to the linkage which connect the pulling mechanism ( chain or screw based ) to the garage door allow the linkage to be oriented in any position in a 360 degree plane perpendicular to the direction of the pulling force. The opener with the modified linkage may then be used to open doors mounted vertically as well as horizontally, thereby enhancing the openers' utility.
