ABSTRACT Suppressor for suppressing the electrolyte of an eluent from a chromatographic column. The suppressor includes a regenerant compartment separated from an effluent com- partment by an ion exchange membrane sheet permeable to ions of the same charge as its exchangable ions. Struc- ture including ion exchange sites is provided in one or both compartments extending between the membrane sheet and compartment walls to define a continuous convoluted liquid flow through passage. Suitable structures are a screen or projections from the compartment walls. In a sandwich suppressor, two membrane sheets are included with an effluent flow channel between them. A detector is provided downstream of the suppressor.
