ABSTRACT A metamorphosed iron ore of the magnetite-hematite type is subjected to a programme of heat treatment in a controlled atmosphere to accomplish a frangible structure providing separability of the iron oxides from the other minerals thereof by cracking and weakening at crystal planes and boundaries, thereby adapting the modified ore for separation of the iron oxides from the other mineral content by low energy separation techniques.
