The shingle has multiple layers including one or more membranes, the lower of which is coated with typically available asphalts, while the overlay which may include a second membrane is coated with an asphalt modified with fillers, polymeric additives, or other materials designed to improve the overall performance characteristics of the shingle under extreme weather conditions.
