Modification of polymers of the type including carbon/carbon double bonds is disclosed wherein the polymerisation of at least one monomer of low water solubility within a pre-existing polymer latex yields material containing interlinked polymers. The process includes the steps of (a) taking or making a colloidal dispersion of the polymer in an aqueous medium, (b) swelling the polymer in the colloidal particles with at least one polymerisable monomer having a solubility in water of less than 10-3 molar; and (c) inducing a free- radical polymerisation of the monomer(s) within the swollen colloidal particles of the polymer. The process is particularly appropriate to preparation of modified natural rubber latex.
Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé de modification de polymères du type incluant des doubles liaisons carbone-carbone. Selon ce procédé, la polymérisation d'au moins un monomère doté d'une faible solubilité dans l'eau au sein d'un latex polymère préexistant produit une matière contenant des polymères conjugués. Ledit procédé consiste (a) à utiliser ou à fabriquer une dispersion colloïdale du polymère dans un milieu aqueux, (b) à faire gonfler le polymère dans les particules colloïdales avec au moins un monomère polymérisable possédant une solubilité dans l'eau inférieure à 10?-3¿ mole et (c) à induire une polymérisation radicalaire du(des) monomère(s) au sein des particules colloïdales gonflées du polymère. Ce procédé convient particulièrement à la préparation de latex de caoutchouc naturel modifié.
