Provided are compounds and methods for modifying a material to change properties of the material, as well as a variety of products obtained using the methods. In one embodiment, a material comprising one or more modifiable functional groups is reacted with an activated hydrophobic acyl group in the presence of a hindered base, thereby to covalently attach the hydrophobic acyl group to the modifiable functional groups on the material. The material which is modified may be, for example, a carbohydrate, and the modifiable functional groups on the material may be hydroxyls. For example, materials such as cellulose may be modified by reacting it with an acid chloride or acid anhydride including a hydrophobic acyl group, in the presence of a hindered base, such as tripentylamine, to attach the hydrophobic acyl groups to the hydroxyls on the cellulose, thereby to increase the hydrophobicity of the cellulose. The methods and compounds disclosed herein may be used to modify materials to improve properties such as resistance, grease repellency, soil resistance and permanent press properties.
La présente invention concerne des composés et des procédés permettant de modifier une matière pour en changer les propriétés. L'invention concerne également divers produits obtenus grâce à ces procédés. Selon une réalisation, le procédé consiste à prendre une matière comprenant au moins un groupe fonctionnel modifiable et à la faire réagir en présence d'une base contrariée avec un groupe acyle hydrophobe activé de façon à le lier par covalence aux groupes fonctionnels modifiables présents sur la matière. Le matériau modifié peut ainsi être un glucide, les groupes fonctionnels modifiables présents sur la matière étant des hydroxyles. On peut ainsi modifier des matières telles que la cellulose en les faisant réagir, en présence d'une base contrariée telle que la tripentylamine, avec un chlorure acide ou un anhydride acide comprenant un groupe acyle hydrophobe. On recherche alors à lier aux hydroxyles présents sur la cellulose les groupes acyles hydrophobes de façon à augmenter l'hydrophobie de la cellulose. L'invention concerne également des procédés et des composés convenant pour modifier des matières de façon à en améliorer des qualités telles que la résistance, la répulsion des graisses, la résistance à la salissure, et l'infroissabilité.
