MODIFIED VOLUTE PUMP CASING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The specification discloses a centrifugal pump in which radial thrust on the impeller shaft is reduced by employing a modified volute casing in which the casing flow area downstream from the cutwater to a point gener- ally opposite the cutwater is significantly greater than would be the flow area of a true volute casing, the area at a point generally opposite the cutwater being signif- icantly less than the flow area of a true volute casing and the area just upstream of the throat back towards the point opposite the cutwater being significantly greater than would be the flow area of a true volute casing. -1-
