A modular system for the demineralization of aqueous liquids comprising a plurality of modular units for the demineralization of liquids, each of the modular units being encapsulated and having a cathode proximate a first end of the modular unit and an anode proximate the opposite end of said modular, and having a plurality of alternating diluting compartments and concentrating compartments positioned between the cathode and the anode, the diluting and concentrating compartments defined by anion and cation permeable membranes, ion exchange material positioned within the diluting compartments, the system having conduit means for passing a first liquid to be purified through the diluting compartments and conduit means for passing a second liquid through the concentrating compartments for accepting ions from the first liquid, means for passing an electrolyte to the cathode and anode and means for recovering the purified liquid from the diluting compartments. Quick release securement means are provided to interconnect the modular units in the system to allow for facile substitution of modular units for servicing and to permit modification of flow capacity requirements by increasing or decreasing the total number of modular units in the system.
L'invention concerne un système modulaire pour la déminéralisation de liquides aqueux, qui comprend une pluralité d'unités moudulaires pour ladite déminéralisation, chaque unité étant encapsulée et possédant une cathode proche d'une première extrémité de l'unité, ainsi qu'une anode proche de l'extrémité opposée de cette unité. Il existe en outre une pluralité de compartiments alternés de dilution et de concentration, placés entre la cathode et l'anode, ces compartiments étant définis par des membranes anioniques et cationiques et un matériau échangeur d'ions placé à l'intérieur des compartiments de dilution. Le système comporte des conduits qui permettent d'envoyer un premier liquide à purifier dans les compartiments de dilution, et des conduits qui permettent d'envoyer un second liquide dans les compartiments de concentration aux fins d'échanges ioniques avec le premier liquide. Il comprend aussi des moyens pour acheminer un électrolyte vers la cathode et l'anode, et des moyens pour récupérer le liquide purifié dans les compartiments de dilution. Un dispositif de raccord rapide est prévu pour relier entre elles les unités modulaires du système afin de permettre le remplacement facile des unités modulaires en cas d'entretien et la modification des caractéristiques de débit en diminuant ou en augmentant le nombre totale d'unités modulaires du système.
