ABSTRACT A bus-oriented optical communication system operating in the frequency multiplex mode is provided. Pluggable couplers and colour coders and decoders are proposed which are designed as self-collimating optical elements. The couplers consist of a self-collimating part included in the bus and a counter- part connected thereto. Without the counterpart, the coupler, by total reflection, causes the light exiting from the bus to be reflected back to the bus practically without loss. The connected counterpart includes a frequency-selective means, such as an interference filter, and couples the desired wavelength band out of the bus by frustrating the total reflection. The frequency coders and decoders also consist of self-collimating components which are either connected via couplers or which may be directly included in the bus The colour coders preferably use reflection gratings as dispersive elements, a colour coder included in the bus consists of two halves with engaging reflection gratings. The reflected light is split in accordance with frequency response of the gratings and the passing light is not split. GE9-79-043
