ABSTRACT A protective leg pad for an athletic participant such as a hockey goalie or the like is disclosed. This leg pad comprises thigh, knee, shin and foot sections. Each of which include a front portion and first and second side portions appended to the front portion. The side portions of each of the sections are attached to and extend from respective opposite lateral edges of the front portion and form therewith a recess for accommodating a corresponding portion of a human leg. Each of the front and side portions comprises a protective plate made of a material which enables protection of the corresponding leg portion from injury from impact by a moving object such as a puck or the like. The leg pad also includes front hinge means for flexibly joining adjacent front portions of the thigh, knee, shin and foot sections in that order. The hinge means are arranged so as to accommodate the shape and movement of the human leg.
