Apparatus for stopping articles moving along a path comprises a support, and first and second stop members mounted on the support for movement generally transversely of the path alternately toward each other to stop movement of an article along the path and away from each other to permit movement of an article past the first and second stop members. A pair of wheels are positioned beyond the limits of travel of the first and second stop members away from each other. A roller chain is trained about the wheels and has first and second bights extending generally transversely of the path. The first stop member is coupled to the first bight, and the second stop member is coupled to the second bight. A prime mover is coupled to the chain. Actuation of the prime mover in a first direction causes the chain to move the first and second stop members toward each other and actuation of the prime mover in a second direction causes the chain to move the first and second stop members away from each other.
