A low air loss patient support system includes a plurality of identical multi-chambered inflatable sacks. A restrictive flow hole connects two adjacent chambers disposed predominately to one side of the centerline of the sack, and each side is separately pressurizable under the control of a microprocessor and a plurality of pressure control valves with pressure transducers and a plurality of flow diverter valves for switching between different modes of configuring the manner in which the sacks are pressurized. The system includes a modular manifold for mounting the pressure control valves, and a modular support member for mounting the sacks via quick- disconnect couplings and having air flow channels defined therethrough. The support system effects a method of rotating or tilting the patient that depres- surizes one side of the sacks while increasing the pressurization of the opposite side of the sacks. The end chamber of the depressurizing side of the sacks remains inflated while the intermediate chamber of the depressurizing side of the sacks becomes progressively deflated during depressurization to permit the end chamber to restrain the patient from sliding off the sacks during tilting. The support system permits practicing the method of relieving pressure points between the patient and the sacks while elevating the head and chest of the patient by reconfiguring the diverter valves to connect alternating sacks at the same pressure and periodically decreasing the pressure in one group of sacks while increasing the pressure in the other group of sacks to alternately relieve the pressure of the weight of the patient between the two different groups of sacks depending upon which group is depres- surizing and which group is being increased in pressure.
Un système à faible perte d'air pour soutenir des patients et comportant plusieurs sacs identiques gonflables à chambres multiples. Un trou restreignant le flux relie deux chambres adjacentes disposées essentiellement sur un côté de la ligne centrale du sac, et chaque côté peut être pressurisé séparément sous le contrôle d'un microprocesseur et de plusieurs valves qui contrôlent la pression, avec des transducteurs de pression et plusieurs valves de dérivation permettant de reconfigurer les sacs qui sont pressurisés. Le système se compose d'un collecteur modulaire auquel se fixent les valves servant à contrôler la pression, et d'un support modulaire servant à fixer les sacs au moyen de raccords à démontage rapide et comportant des canaux définis pour le flux d'air. Le système de soutien permet de tourner ou d'incliner le patient en dépressurisant un côté des sacs tout en augmentant la pression du côté opposé des sacs. La chambre du côté dépressurisé des sacs demeure gonflée alors que la chambre intermédiaire du côté dépressurisé des sacs se dégonfle progressivement pendant la pressurisation pour permettre à la chambre du bout d'empêcher le patient de glisser des sacs pendant qu'on l'incline. Le système de soutien permet d'éliminer des points de pression entre le patient et les sacs tout en levant la tête et le torse du patient en reconfigurant les valves de déviation pour relier des sacs en alternance, au même point de pression, et périodiquement diminuer la pression dans un groupe de sacs tout en augmentant la pression dans d'autres groupes de sacs pour diminuer la pression exercée par le poids du patient entre deux groupes de sacs différents, en fonction du groupe qui est dépressurisé et de celui qui est pressurisé.
