A modular tooling apparatus (10) for performing a metalworking operation on a workpiece (98) or a family of workpieces. The modular tooling apparatus consists of a base (10) having one or more attachment surfaces (30), and one or more inserts (50) that can be inserted semi-permanently to the attachment surfaces. The attachment surface is typically a pocket in the surface of the base. The insert has a workpiece support feature (71) that can support and/or secure the workpiece into the proper position and orientation for machining. The base, pockets and inserts are configured to provide a characteristic location and orientation for the workpiece relative to the base, and to the metalworking machine. The modular tooling apparatus permits machining a family of workpiece members that are related but different in detail, by inserting the insert member from the family of inserts to properly position and orient the corresponding workpiece member, without needing to change, disconnect, or move the base tooling.
Un dispositif modulaire d'outillage (10) pour exécuter une opération d'usinage des métaux sur une pièce (98) ou une famille de pièces. Le dispositif modulaire d'outillage comprend un socle (10) présentant une ou plusieurs surfaces pour accessoires (30), et une ou plusieurs pièces rapportées (50) qui peuvent être disposées de façon semi-permanente sur les surfaces pour accessoires. La surface pour accessoires est habituellement un évidement dans la surface du socle. La pièce rapportée comporte un support de pièce (71) qui permet de supporter et/ou de fixer la pièce dans la bonne position et la bonne orientation pour son usinage. Le dispositif modulaire d'outillage permet d'usiner une famille de pièces semblables et différentes au niveau du détail, par insertion de la pièce rapportée d'un ensemble de pièces rapportées permettant de positionner et d'orienter correctement la pièce, sans besoin de modifier, débrancher ou déplacer l'outillage du socle.
