Modular prosthesis kits and systems are disclosed. The kit includes a plurality of stems (12) having a bore (30) therein and a plurality of necks (20) having a tapered distal end (22) adapted to taper lock in the bore (18) of one of the stems (12). Each neck (20) includes a stem registration element (32) on the distal end of the neck (20), and each stem (12) includes a neck registration element (30) in an end portion of the bore (18). The stem registration elements (32) of certain necks (20) and the neck registration elements (30) of certain stems (12) are configured to prevent certain necks (20) from taper locking with certain stems (12) in at least one position, and the stem registration elements (32) of certain necks (20) and the neck registration elements (30) of certain stems (12) cooperate to permit taper locking of certain necks (20) with certain stems (12).
