Disclosed herein is a clamping block module for securing an article in a support frame or carrier for producing a component subassembly. The clamping block module is attached to the support frame oil static or articulable members or transfer portions. The peripheral edge of an article, for example an automobile door, is engaged and/or supported by a series of pads coupled to the support frame. The clamping block, coupled to an articulable member or transfer portion mounted on the support frame selectively reversibly engages the article so as to temporarily secure the component in place in the support frame such that an associate can install additional parts on the article for producing a subassembly or move the article to a second location or subsequent location. The clamping block has a body portion with a plurality of elongate projections. In operation, a local area of the elongate projections have a distal portion laterally displaced and the projections frictionally engage a portion of the peripheral edge of the article when the article is secured in the support frame. The plurality of projections may allow the clamping block module to be used for securing various different components having different contours.
