A method of retro-fitting a moisture detection fitting (1) in the wall (5) of a building is disclosed. A hole is drilled into a wall (5) of the building and into an element of the timber frame (7) of the house. The sensor (1), in the form of a probe is inserted into the hole so that a part of it contacts the timber frame element (7). The sensor is in the form of an elongated body (3) in which two electrodes (4) are contained. The electrodes are either directly in contact with the timber frame (7) element, or are in contact with an absorbent filler (18) which is in contact with the frame element. End plate (2) of the sensor carries contacts for each electrode which allow a meter to be connected across the electrodes to measure the resistance. Changes in resistance indicate changes in the moisture content of the timber frame element (7).
