A breathable building material including a building material and a plurality of elongated shaped fibers having channels extending lengthwise along, and/or through, the fiber. Building materials having channeled fibers extending therethrough wick moisture from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration. The wicking properties of the present invention reduce the concentration of water, and lessen the probability and/or severity of rot, mold and mildew. Some embodiments of the invention incorporate biocides with the fibers. Biocides can include antifungal, antimicrobial, and antimildew agents. Some fibers are coated with biocide prior to being incorporated into the building material layers. Building materials incorporating fibers include siding, insulation, wallboard, paint, wallpaper paste, wallpaper, plaster, ceiling tile, wallpaper or any other building material. Fibers can be incorporated in and transversely oriented perpendicularly to the building material surfaces, or randomly oriented, depending on the embodiment.
L'invention concerne un matériau de construction imper-respirant composé d'un matériau de construction et de plusieurs fibres de forme allongée comprenant des creux s'étendant sur leur longueur et/ou à travers la fibre. L'invention concerne également des matériaux de construction comprenant des fibres creuses s'étendant à travers ces matériaux, aux fins d'absorption de la vapeur d'eau par effet mèche, à partir d'endroits à forte teneur en vapeur d'eau ou à faible teneur en vapeur d'eau. Les propriétés d'effet mèche de l'invention réduisent la teneur en eau et diminuent la probabilité et/ou la sévérité de la pourriture et des moisissures. Dans certains modes de réalisation de l'invention, les fibres comprennent des biocides, lesquels comportent des agents antifongiques, antimicrobiens et antimoisissures, certaines fibres étant revêtues de biocide avant d'être incorporées dans les couches de matériau de construction. Des matériaux de construction incorporant ces fibres comprennent des parements, des matériaux d'isolation, des panneaux muraux, de la peinture, de la colle de papier peint, des papiers peints, du plâtre, des carreaux de plafond, ou tout autre matériau de construction. Il est possible d'incorporer perpendiculairement les fibres et de les orienter transversalement dans les surfaces des matériaux de construction, ou de les orienter de manière aléatoire, en fonction du mode de réalisation. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré de l'invention, on utilise des fibres trilobées, ou trilobées coiffées d'une extrémité, et comprenant des creux communiquant entre eux et s'étendant sur la longueur des fibres.
