A moldable panel (10) having a predetermined shape for cushioning and protecting protrusions and areas including a flexible elastomeric thermoplastic honey comb panel (11) and a rigid thermoplastic plate (12). The honeycomb panel has a honeycomb core (14) formed of undulated strips (18, 20) of resilient thermoplastic material, thermal compression bonded together to form cell walls defining a plurality of contiguous regularly shaped cells. The core (14) has a first face formed by a first extremity of the cell walls and a second face formed by a second extremity of the cell walls. The core (14) is maintained in its expanded configuration so that it can be used to anisotropically flex to stabilize and spread the load experienced by a user of the moldable panel (10). The core (14) is bonded to a first surface of the rigid thermoplastic plate (12). The plate is heated to a first temperature which is sufficient to mold or form the plate into the desired shape, but insufficient to melt the bonds formed between the honeycomb panel and the plate, and the bonds between the strips of the honeycomb panel. The second face of the honeycomb panel is heated to a second temperature, lower than said first temperature, to relieve stresses built up in the panel as the plate is being molded.
L'invention concerne un panneau moulable (10) ayant une forme prédéterminée pour pouvoir constituer un revêtement d'amortissement et de protection qui se place sur différents éléments faisant saillie et différentes surfaces. Ce panneau moulable (10) comprend un panneau en nid d'abeilles (11) thermoplastique, élastomère, souple, et une plaque thermoplastique (12) rigide. Le panneau en nid d'abeilles comprend une couche centrale (14) en nid d'abeilles, constituée de bandes ondulées (18, 20) de matériau thermoplastique élastique, soudées les unes avec les autres par compression thermique pour former des parois définissant une pluralité d'alvéoles contiguës, de forme régulière. Ladite couche centrale (14) présente une première face formée par une première extrémité des parois d'alvéoles, et une seconde face formée par une seconde extrémité des parois d'alvéoles. La couche centrale (14) est maintenue à l'état gonflé, de sorte qu'elle puisse fléchir de manière anisotrope pour stabiliser et répartir la charge exercée par un utilisateur du panneau moulable (10). Cette couche centrale (14) est liée à une première surface de la plaque thermoplastique (12) rigide. Cette plaque est chauffée jusqu'à une première température, température qui est suffisante pour permettre son moulage ou son formage, mais qui est insuffisante pour faire fondre les points de soudure entre le panneau en nid d'abeilles et la plaque, et entre les bandes ondulées dudit panneau en nid d'abeilles. La seconde face du panneau en nid d'abeilles est chauffée jusqu'à une seconde température, inférieure à ladite première température, pour éliminer les contraintes produites dans le panneau lors du moulage de la plaque.
