2073514 9208385 PCTABS00013 In order to tighten the last strings (32) of an upper (30) mounted on a last (12), the last strings (32) are wounded on a bobbin (28) mounted for movement in a direction parallel to the last sole. The operator manually grips the ends of the last strings (32) as the bobbin (28) is moved for tightening the last strings (32), and modulates the manual gripping tension on the ends of the last strings (32) so that the friction force between the last strings (32) and the bobbin (28) is limited to such a value that the last strings (32) are not broken. Pinner teeth (52) mounted on a fluid cylinder system then pins the upper (30) on last pins (34) on the last sole. After molding the sole on the upper (30), the last cooling circuit (70) supplies high pressure air to the last toe to aid in removing the shoe from the last (12).
