Abstract of the disclosure: Moldings are described which are composed of a silicic acid with a layer structure with the general formula (H)2SiyO2y+1, y being 1.7 to 24, or the corresponding hydrates, in which the protons are completely or partly substitu- ted by lithium, sodium, potassium or ammonium. They can be prepared for example by extruding pulverulent layer silicic acids of the above defined general formula, or the corresponding hydrates, to produce cylindrical blanks, if appropriate after moistening with water or an organic solvent, and then drying the blanks, or by introducing the same starting materials into a mold, as dry or moist powders, converting them to moldings with the application of pressure and, if appropriate, drying the moldings. The moldings of the invention are porous and have good mechanical stability. Due to these properties they can be used without being crushed as packing in a column for the adsorption of vapours from gases.
